Danae will focus on visions of pushing borders in colonial and postcolonial Latin America. Adventurers and visionaries seeking freedom and prosperity often struggled with linguistic and cultural borders. But do these borders persist today? Danae will draw on her own research to describe how borders have changed – if at all.

Definitions of social inclusion are drawn along different boundaries – be they linguistic, ethnic, or social. In this talk, I will look at how identity is negotiated in enclave communities in rural South America.
