Workshop in Basel on Reporting in the Social Sector

Basel at 5.30 in the morning
It was a beautifully fresh morning, and my run along the Rhine was the perfect start into a day with a workshop in Basel City.
It was a workshop on reporting in the social sector. One of the participants was an outstandingly skilled writer. She writes lively reports that make readers feel as if they experienced the case themselves. We looked at one of her reports, and her explanation was this: “I wanted the reader to experience how difficult the case had been.” She certainly excelled.
Unfortunately, this is the opposite of what reports in the social sector are about. Instead, such reports are stripped from emotions. So we looked at how to achieve this and smiled at lot as we shortened her text.
The fact that reporting can be such an unemotional exercise has me enjoying my runs even more. I see the place from an observer’s perspective and imagine what it must be like to live in the place I’m running through. After all, reporting is all about telling the stories of life!
